What Social Classes Owe to Each Other

What Social Classes Owe to Each Other

William Graham Sumner developed the theory of social Darwinism  in theory of “survival of the fittest”.

The term survival of the fittest made its significance in the book, What Social Classes Owe to Each Other which was released in 1883.  Sumner insisted that “millionaires are the product of natural selection.” The survival of fittest really boils down to wealth and power amounting to some kind of physical fitness and those who are unfit would die off to make room for the rest. If the rich tried to help the poor then there were messing with the laws of nature and was said to slow down evolution.

Additionally the fourteenth Amendment declares no state can "deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process or law."  It seems what is really owed to one another not necessarily by class is the ability to live life how you choose to where and how. Wealth and class should not matter and respect should be given regardless.

What did the Ku Klux Klan really want??

Summary-
The Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1866 (KKK). They started out much like a fraternity then turned to a much serious group with serious matters. The Klan was known to own its popularity to the  "instinct of self preservation". They were seen as a brotherhood that was protecting their children and families from crime and violence. They felt that they should punish those who did not act right or who had done something wrong as it was seen as their "duty". It was far more then just protecting their families though. They terrorized their enemies- the blacks and those who broke the racial code would be punished either by being whipped, burned, or shot. Between 1868 and 1871 the political violence reached drastic levels and in Arkansas nearly 300 killings in 3 months. The Klan terrorized the republican leaders and voters most and drove the blacks away from the polls.

Questions:

1) In the eyes of the southerners and Klansmen how were their actions seen as good and in protective measures?

2) What were some examples of how the KKK Terrorized the black population and why was it so hard to arrest and convict klansmen?
